The Book of Hebrews: Message One
By Dr. Michael
Guido, D.D.
As Dan
Crawford walked silently through the tall grass in
Africa, a native said, "You're angry!"
Astonished, he asked, "Why do you think
so?" "Because," came the reply,
"you're silent." Intrigued by that
explanation, the missionary said, "Tell me
more." "In our language," explained
the native, "we say that if a man is silent,
he's angry. That's why we know God is angry with us.
He's silent." "But God isn't silent,"
said Crawford quickly. "He speaks to us in
nature: 'The heavens declare the glory of God; and
the firmament showeth His handiwork.' He speaks to us
in our conscience: 'The conscience also bearing
witness…accusing or else excusing one another.' He
speaks to us in His Word: 'O earth, earth, hear the
Word of the Lord.' He speaks to us by His Son: 'God,
who…spoke in time past…by the prophets, hath…spoken
to us by His Son.' No, God isn't silent."
He speaks to
us in nature. "Every object in nature is
impressed with God's footsteps," said Thomas
Guthrie, "and every day repeats the wonders of
creation. There's not an object, be it pebble or
pearl, weed or rose, the flower-spangled turf
beneath, or the star-spangled sky above, not a worm
or an angel, a drop of water or a boundless ocean, in
which intelligence may not discern, and piety adore,
the providence of Him who took our nature that He
might save our souls." This revelation of God in
nature is sufficient to convince men of the existence
of God and to convict men of their godlessness. The
Bible says, "Since earliest times men have seen
the earth and sky and all God made, and have known of
His existence and great eternal power. So they have
no excuse for saying they don't know whether or not
there is a God. Yes, they know about Him all right,
but they wouldn't admit it or worship Him or even
thank Him for all His daily care." While this
revelation of God in nature is sufficient to show man
his sin, it's not sufficient to save man from his
sin. History furnishes us ample proof of this. So the
Father sent the Son to be the Savior of the world.
God speaks to
us in our conscience. The Bible says, "Man's
conscience is the lamp of the Eternal." That
means, your conscience is God's lamp within your
breast. You know what's right and what's wrong. And
this warning light goes on inside you when you do
wrong. There's no witness so terrible, no accuser so
powerful as your conscience. It was said of the Roman
Empire under the Caesars that the whole world was one
big prison for Caesar, for it was impossible for
anyone to escape who had offended the emperor. If he
crossed the mountains or the seas, Caesar would find
him. Some prolonged their lives by hiding in caves,
but not for long. But there's no hiding from your
conscience and God. "Your sin will find you
out."
God speaks to
us in His Word. The Bible isn't merely a book, it's
the Book. It stands as high above all other books as
the heaven is high above the earth. Destroyed, yet
it's indestructible; despised, yet it's highly
honored; old, yet it's fresher than tomorrow's news.
And the longer you read it, the more you'll love it.
Why? It's the Word of the Lord. He caused consecrated
men to write down exactly what He wanted written. Yet
there are some ministers who don't use it for their
devotions or discourses. Bibleless sermons are far
from being what they ought to be. They're like the
bride's first cake. You may recall
"She
measured out the butter with a very solemn air,
The milk and
sugar also, and she took the greatest care
To count the
eggs correctly, and add a little bit
Of baking
powder, which you know, beginner's oft omit.
Then she
stirred it all together, and baked it for an hour,
But she never
quite forgave herself for leaving out the
flour."
Let's never
forget that Christ is the Wheat of God, crushed in
the mill of God at Calvary to make the Bread of Life
for famished men. In the Bible is the Bread of Life
revealed, and on this broadcast He's ever so
proclaimed.
God speaks to
us in His Son. In Him we see wisdom in all its
infinity, power to its utmost extent, love in all its
dimensions, and God in all His glory. If you want to
know what God is like, take a good look at Jesus.
Every prospect we have for pardon, every hope we have
of heaven, all must be linked to the Lord Jesus. One
of the wonders of the old world was the Appian Way, a
paved highway leading from Rome to Southern Italy. As
I was walking on it one day, I couldn't help but
think of our Lord who said, "I am the way."
He's the Way from earth to heaven, from death to
life, from man to God. Take Him, won't you!
