The Book of John: Message Forty
One
By Dr. Michael
Guido, D.D.
There's a
charming painting entitled YES OR NO? A young lady is
holding the picture of her lover, and she's thinking
over the answer she must give. He asked for her hand
and heart, and she's wondering, "Can I give
myself to him? Can I unite my heart with his?"
Her attitude is sweet and tender; you can tell she's
thinking of going to him. One night, long ago, the
disciples of our Lord had a decision to make. Many
returned to their old associations, and no longer
went with Him. Turning to the twelve, the Lord asked,
"Will you also go away?" "Lord,"
replied Peter, "to whom shall we go? Thou hast
the words of eternal life."
You, too, have
a decision to make. Will you leave the Lord? You have
nothing to gain if you give up God. But you do have
everything to lose.
To whom shall
you go in your sorrow? Sorrow began when Adam and Eve
sinned against the Lord. Can't you see them as they
look with tear stained eyes and broken hearts upon
the lifeless form of their murdered son? On that
dreadful day they were crushed with a weight of woe.
But sorrow didn't end there. It has gone on and on,
and today it's the universal language of man. No one
escapes it. Every back has its burden. Every heart
has its hurt. Every soul has its sorrow. But earth
has no sorrow that Jesus can't heal. A little woman,
burdened and brokenhearted, went into a heathen
temple in India. In her arms she carried a child that
was dying. She held her little one and started to
pray. "To whom are you praying?" asked a
missionary. "I don't know," she answered.
"But there ought to be someone out there
somewhere who would hear a mother's cry and save her
child and heal her broken heart." Oh, my friend,
there is Someone who cares! And His name is Jesus!
If you go away
from the Savior to whom will you go in your sin? In a
village near Luxor, Egypt, there are ruins of the
great temple of Karnak. When the walls came tumbling
down everyone was amazed. No one knew why they fell.
A search was made, and it was discovered that just
one flaw in one stone caused the destruction. So your
life may be beautiful, but the blemish of sin is
there. You may be cultured, but the crack of sin is
there. You may be talented, but the taint of sin is
there. You need to come to the Lord Jesus, for only
He can take away the sin and transform your life. If
you go away from Him to whom shall you go with your
sin? Atheism can't absolve it, education can't erase
it, pleasure can't pardon it, riches can't redeem it,
science can't save it, but Jesus can, for the Bible
says, "He shall save His people from their
sins." If you go away from the Savior to whom
will you go in your separation? There's no medicine
against death. The young may die, and the old must
die. Longfellow wrote,
"There is
no flock, howere watched and tended, but one dead
lamb is there!
There is no
fireside, howsoe'er defended, but has one vacant high
chair."
The Bible
says, "It is appointed unto men once to
die." But if you go away from the Lord, who'll
hold you up when the billows of death come up to your
head? Can any human voice charm open heaven's gate? A
bright young man turned to the Lord, and he served
Him with all his heart. At his death his family found
a poem he had just written. It was:
"Abide
with me: fast falls the eventide; the darkness
deepens; Lord with me abide!
When other
helpers fail, and comforts flee, help of the
helpless, O abide with me."
